In the academic side

The story of DETI

The University of Aveiro was born in 1973 and in the following year, the Department of Electronics and Telecommunications, one of the first to appear, began to flourish. Its designation changed in 2006 to become DETI (Department of Electronics, Telecommunications and Informatics), to mirror the current activity in the department in the area of Informatics.

There are 76 teachers, all of them with PhDs, opening the door every day with the certainty that the future of their young students begins there. This time we were the ones opening the door of our house. We received Professor Nuno Borges Carvalho, one of the main drivers of every best thing done in the department.

Lecturing at DETI for more than 20 years (at the University where he graduated), Nuno Borges Carvalho is currently the Director of the department. With a vast experience in radio systems for 5G networks, as well as satellite and RFID communications, Nuno Borges Carvalho is also part of the Radio Systems Group of IT, a Unit that does Research and Development projects directly with DETI, along with IEETA.

’’create relationships and explore the opportunities of the future’’

Close collaboration between DETI and Ubiwhere

"It was thanks to that teaching process at DETI that Ubiwhere was born, having emerged as one of the department's success stories."

Nuno Borges Carvalho believes that these collaborations drive the technological evolution needed in the department. They allow students to directly collaborate with telecommunication companies, create relationships and explore the opportunities of the future. The know-how that these researchers bring into the University, for the students' education, derives from technological investigations in vogue. For that reason, today, DETI is a step ahead studying topics that involve 5G networks, broadcasting, mobile systems, satellite systems, wired network systems, and the Internet of Things.

It was thanks to that teaching process at DETI that Ubiwhere was born, having emerged as one of the department's success stories. Nuno Ribeiro, one of the founders of the company, not only studied at DETI but he actually had classes from Professor Nuno Borges Carvalho.

Today, it is with great pride that the Professor recognises and values this case of success. Created at the University of Aveiro, by DETI students, the company is making an impact today at a worldwide level with its technological solutions developed within the telecommunications and smart cities sectors.

We might not know, precisely, what the future holds for Ubiwhere. We are sure, however, that DETI not only can launch success stories, but they can also drive the experience and desire to revolutionise the telecommunications sector.
