Ubiwhere’s Smart5Grid project (PT2020) releases White Paper with information and final results

Ubiwhere

The Smart5Grid project (PT2020) has come to an end and released its White Paper with information and a demonstration of the final results. Ubiwhere was part of the consortium of this project that aimed to make energy sector operators take advantage of the benefits associated with the use of 5G networks.

The Smart5Grid project (PT2020) was managed by several consortium entities composed of Ubiwhere, PROEF and the University of Coimbra. This project arose to make energy sector operators take advantage of the advantages of using 5G networks with reliability and security. Thus, this project was the proposed solution to precisely fulfil the particular requirements imposed by Smart Grids, such as high data transfer rate and real-time monitoring.

Smart5Grid (PT2020) is a solution based on an infrastructure management framework composed of management, control and monitoring modules inserted in network-slicing mechanisms for virtualising independent networks in the same infrastructure as a physical network. The implementation of Smart5Grid also allowed the development of a Smart Grid infrastructure monitoring platform, which served as a tool in an Integrated Operational Management and Control Centre. As part of the project, the Urban Platform, a Ubiwhere solution designed and implemented as a cloud platform for smart cities to be used in integrated management and control centres, was adapted for Smart Grid infrastructure monitoring use cases.

Regarding its impact on the energy sector, it is worth highlighting the increased resilience and security of networks or improving the quality of service provided while increasing operational efficiency. The capabilities provided by 5G have precisely enabled industries with critical systems to adopt "shared public networks", with clear efficiency gains, both at the time of acquisition and in operation and maintenance. In this way, the Smart5Grid project has enabled energy companies to access the technologies and, functionalities, capabilities inherent in 5G. The White Paper of the finalised project is now available to everyone: Access it here below and download it!
