Ubiwhere implements new applications in the Smart PAYT solution

Ubiwhere

The PAYT philosophy represents the pay-as-you-throw principle, in which the citizen that produces more waste should be the one that pays more for the use of the system. For this, Ubiwhere developed a system based on the mechanism of conditional access to containers, allowing the identification of the user in each deposit.

- App for citizen’s onboarding

This app aims to register citizens/households in the system (and subsequent delivery of the RFID card). Each container has an RFID device, and each citizen receives an RFID card that identifies them. Without it, you will not be able to open the container. Through a door-to-door awareness campaign, the onboarding process starts by making citizens aware of the importance of waste separation and the role of technology in this area. Users may also turn to municipal and parish councils to clarify doubts regarding the new system, but Ubiwhere developed a solution that facilitates and improves communication with the citizen. To support the citizens’ outreach, Ubiwhere developed an application for citizens’ registration whose objective is to register citizens/households in the system (for subsequent delivery of the RFID card). The process starts by raising the citizen’s awareness about the importance of waste separation and the role of technology in this area.

- App for installation and maintenance of containers

This app aims to support the installation of containers on-site. Its functionalities include:

- Validation of sensors, alarms, etc.

- Checking container installation through audiovisual recording

- Scheduling of preventive maintenance.

As part of the innovation project, Ubiwhere faced several challenges during the implementation process of the PAYT system, such as the definition of alarmists to monitor the system and the meaning of constructive metrics and analytics for those who manage waste treatment. Citizen involvement remains the main obstacle, as the system impacts the daily task of depositing waste.

Currently, the Smart PAYT solution works through an access control system, helping municipalities to monitor waste management. Our solution as an implementation of the selective bio-waste collection system, winning proposal to INOVA-EM, is running as a pilot project. We already have hundreds of registered users through the collective pieces of equipment for bio-waste collection in Cantanhede Municipality provided by Ubiwhere. Access the product’s website here for more information about this solution and its technological advances.
