The Internet of Things (IoT)

Ubiwhere

The Internet of Things (IoT) is a growing network of daily objects that can share information and complete tasks – from consumer goods to industrial machines.

The IoT refers to a technological revolution that aims to connect the objects used every day to the World Wide Web. Today, we can see emerging more and more home appliances, means of transport, shoes, clothes and more, connected to the Internet and to other devices such as computers and smartphones.

The concept is that, increasingly, the physical and the digital world will become one, through devices that communicate with each other, data centres and its clouds. Wearable devices, such as Google Glass and the SmartWatch 2, transforms mobility and the presence of the Internet in various objects in a reality closer and closer to us.

The idea of connecting objects is discussed since 1991, when the TCP/IP connection and the Internet we know today started to become popular. Bill Joy, cofounder of Sun Microsystems, thought about the Device to Device (D2D) Connection. In 1999, Kevin Ashton from MIT proposed the term "Internet of Things" and ten years later wrote "That 'Internet of Things' Thing" for the RFID Journal

The limitation of time and the routine will cause people to connect to the Internet in different ways. According to Kevin Ashton we can collect movement data from our bodies with much greater precision than today's information. With these records, we will be able to reduce, optimise and save natural resources and energy.

We may say today that the IoT can be used to improve our lives and our businesses in many ways. But how will we benefit from the IoT?
