DEMETER launched to build an interoperable and sustainable agri-food sector

Ubiwhere

It might occasionally seem like a distant reality, but the agro-food sector is actually on the basis of our subsistence and plays a key part in our lives and our economy. This sector has been facing several challenges, which often propitiate an unbalanced exploitation of the planet’s resources, with the results of such practice at plain sight (e.g. increasing pollution and extinction of wildlife).

It has become clear that sustainable agriculture practices must be a priority in our path to become a sustainable society and offer citizens a better quality of life.

The key is to balance the available resources with agriculture production through better management practices. With this vision in mind, Ubiwhere is taking part in a new H2020 project aiming at the integration of data collection technologies on the basis of a sustainable agri-food system, that will ensure the quality of food, optimize farmer’s decision-making and propitiate cost-effective, environmentally-friendly operations.

The DEMETER project was launched at the beginning of this month. Its ultimate goal is to potentiate a secure and sustainable European IoT technology and business ecosystem, that transforms the agri-food sector in the EU and eventually, in the whole world. To this end, it will cover the large-scale deployment of interoperable smart farming IoT-based platforms, through 20 pilots across 18 countries.

The project will involve 60 partners and gather multiple participants from different production sectors and systems and different farm sizes and types, making the data collection and analysis more extensive and precise.

Side-by-side with INESC TEC, INIAV, Fenadegas, and other partner companies, Ubiwhere will support DEMETER’s pilots held in Portugal, to promote IoT solutions and other technologies towards the optimization of precision farming practices of Mediterranean Woody Crops, Olives and vineyards, taking into account small farmers'''' economic limitations.

We will play an essential part in the design and specification of these pilots, as well as their evaluation and assessment. Leveraging our extensive experience in the development of IoT orchestration middleware platforms will also support its IoT Market Place. Our FIWARE expertise will drive us to extend the reach of this project. The powerful set of APIs enabled by the technology will foster the standardization layer that brings all the solutions and data sources together.

Ubiwhere envisions to be involved in the establishment of a future that suits all of us. Which is why we seize every opportunity to address the different intervenients of global sustainability: from innovative implementations across Smart Cities and Communities (addressing electric mobility, smart water and electricity usage...) to the safeguard of our world’s precious resources.
