The Machine to Machine (M2M) evolution

Ubiwhere

Machine to Machine (M2M) refers to technologies that allow both wired systems or wireless to communicate with other devices that have the same ability.

As wireless devices such as smartphones and tablets expand, and as the technologies that deliver wireless Internet services such as LTE rolls on a larger scale, M2M technology is gaining more adherence these days and brings public wireless data networks to more and more consumers and businesses.

The most well-known type of M2M communication is telemetry, which has been used since the early part of the last century to transmit operational data. Pioneers in telemetrics start by using the well-known telephone lines and later start looking at radio waves to gather and transmit measurements from monitoring instruments in remote locations. The Internet and improved standards for wireless technology have expanded the role of telemetry from pure engineering, science and manufacturing to everyday use in products that we have at home - connected appliances. Products built with M2M communication capabilities are often marketed to end users as being “smart.”

Where to use M2M technology?

There are several applications running and even many others to be discovered in the near future.

For instance, if we look for product restocking for example, a vending machine can message the distributor when a particular item is running low, alerts about their vending machine location, the state inventory and eventual maintenance issues, thus enabling companies to achieve high levels of efficiency in the management of their assets, helping them monitoring the machines remotely and in real time.

M2M can also be used for water treatment plants, spreading various sensors at all levels of processing chain for detecting anomalies in the condition of water. We can also control the traffic in large cities with sensors that will detect the traffic flow, and by using an appropriate software, change the traffic lights signaling and much more.

M2M communication is an important aspect of warehouse management, remote control, traffic control, logistic services, and much more, formin
