Today we honour the Open Data Day!

Today, March the 4th, we honour the Open Data Day: an annual celebration of open data worldwide. It's the seventh edition and, according to the official website, "groups from around the world create local events on the day where they will use open data in their communities. It is an opportunity to show the benefits of open data and encourage the adoption of open data policies in government, business and civil society".

If you're not aware of the concept of open data, don't worry! According to the Open Data Handbook, it's "data that can be freely used, re-used and redistributed by anyone - subject only, at most, to the requirement to attribute and share alike".

Why are we celebrating this day? Ubiwhere has several projects which involve opening information for others to work with it, not only "static" (as in data that do not regularly change) but also dynamic, real-time information collected from devices of several types and domains.

For instance, we have developed the interfaces bringing open access to real-time, contextual environmental data from 75 fixed and mobile units (environmental monitoring stations) located across the city of Porto. Scanners installed on the City Council's 200+ fleet of vehicles enhance the data, creating a large-scale mobile scanner. External providers like the city's water supplier, transport data providers, social media data and business startup statistics are all plugged into this open platform to allow the city itself to guide you as you explore, travel, and work. Check here and here for more information.

Another case is EMBERS, a project aiming at bringing to market a smart cities mobility platform. Providing open interfaces for data and services on urban mobility, we're attempting to engage local development communities in building innovative solutions, using data from their municipalities', at the same time enhancing the city service providers' operational efficiency. Are you convinced? Perfect, all you need now is to find the closest event and celebrate the day!
