Leiria Urban Platform

Smart Cities

Implementation of Ubiwhere’s Urban Platform within the ’Leiria Smart City’ project

The Município de Leiria sought a solution to integrate dispersed information on public transport, parking, and other urban infrastructure to support political decision-makers and ensure the efficient delivery of services to citizens.

With the main goal to address these challenges, Leiria launched the Leiria Smart City project, an initiative that leverages digital and technological tools to consolidate urban data and support decision-making on mobility and sustainability.

With the support of Ubiwhere, an integrated data management platform was developed to centralise essential information on urban mobility in Leiria. The solution brings together real-time data on public transport - namely the Mobilis service - facilitating journey planning; on parking, with up-to-date information on car parks and available spaces; on shared bicycles through the Biclis scheme; and on electric vehicle charging, including the location and status of charging points. This information is made available to citizens via a web portal and the mobis.leiria mobile app, both developed by Ubiwhere, ensures simple and centralised access to the city’s main mobility services. Beyond digital channels, Digiwest also delivers data to the public through urban digital displays, enabling citizens to access useful mobility information while moving around the city.

The implementation of this solution has delivered tangible results. Data centralisation has improved urban mobility by enabling more efficient management of transport services and infrastructure, reducing congestion, and enhancing the user experience. By promoting public transport and soft mobility, the project has also improved environmental sustainability, reducing the city’s carbon footprint. This effort received national recognition when the Leiria Smart City project was awarded the “Município Amigo do Consumidor” prize by DECO in the Digital category, underscoring Leiria’s commitment to digital transformation for its citizens.

The partnership between the Municipality of Leiria and Ubiwhere delivered an innovative solution that not only optimises urban management but also encourages citizen participation in building a smarter and more sustainable city. The “Leiria Smart City” project serves as a model for other cities seeking to integrate technology into urban governance.
